NATURAL HYDROGEN
Natural hydrogen in the Earth’s upper crust may be generated via mineral reactions that occur during the serpentinization process in rocks that are subject to naturally driven fluid flow or via radiolysis of groundwater by radioactive elements (U, Th, K). Both mechanisms can provide a significant source of natural hydrogen over variable timescales.
Exploration activity surrounding this carbon-neutral natural resource has recently surged, and pilot studies are now exploring hydrogen yield during injection of fluid into ultramafic rocks.
